Our story · Since 2016

One family.
A patch of land.
A promise kept daily.

We never planned to run a sanctuary. We planned to keep a promise to two unwanted goats — and that promise simply kept growing.

Who we are

Founded by a family,
run like one too.

We are not a corporation or a franchise. We are parents, kids and a handful of stubbornly devoted volunteers who decided our home would have room for the animals the world had given up on.

Our children grew up learning to muck stalls before they could spell, to sit quietly with a frightened animal, and to understand that compassion is just love with its sleeves rolled up. The sanctuary isn’t something we run alongside our life — it is our life.

— The Kozak family

“We don’t rescue animals to be heroes. We do it because home should mean everyone.”

How we got here

From two goats to ninety-three lives.

2016

The first yes

We said yes to two goats nobody wanted, with $150 and no real plan — just the feeling that we couldn’t walk away. We built their first shelter out of pallets and borrowed tools, and learned everything as we went. It was the smallest possible beginning, and it changed the whole shape of our lives.

2017

Six sick, slaughter-bound goats

A year later we drove home six dying goats and spent everything we had. After sleepless nights, round-the-clock feedings and thousands in vet care, three of them pulled through — and never left. That winter taught us what real rescue costs, and that we’d pay it every time.

2019

Bigger animals, bigger hearts

Boris the horse arrived too weak to stand; today he runs the morning fence line like he owns the sky. Maggie the cow joined the herd that same year. With every larger animal, the pasture stopped feeling like a backyard and started feeling like a real sanctuary — one with room to grow.

2021

Opening the gates

We welcomed our first summer-camp children and visitors onto the land. Watching a city kid meet a rescued hen, or sit quietly beside a once-frightened goat, changed how we understood our work — it was never only about the animals. It was about everyone who got to fall in love with them.

2026

Ninety-three names

Today the homestead is home to ninety-three animals — every one with a name, a story, and a place at the table for the rest of their lives. From two goats to a whole community of rescued lives, the promise hasn’t changed at all. It just got bigger, louder, and a great deal harder to feed.

What we believe

We didn’t set out to build a sanctuary. We set out to keep one small promise  and we never found a good reason to stop.

Kozak Homestead is a real home before it is anything else. We live here, our
children grow up here, and around us live ninety-three animals who were once
bound for slaughter, neglect or abandonment. Every gate, every feed bin and
every vet bill is part of the same quiet idea: that kindness is not a gesture, it’s a
way of life you choose again every single morning.
